This study aimed to evaluate the structural changes and reserve deposition of malagueta and biquinho pepper seeds and to determine their chemical composition during ontogeny. The fruits were collected 25, 40, 55, 70, 85, and 100 days after anthesis (DAA). After collection, the seeds were extracted and fixed in FAA 50 and then stored in 70% ethanol. Subsequently, the seeds were embedded in methacrylate (Historesin) and sectioned with a microtome. The sections were stained with Toluidine blue O for anatomical analysis and Xylidine Ponceau, Periodic acid Schiff (PAS) and Lugol’s iodine solution for histochemical analysis. Sections were made using a cryomicrotome for acid phloroglucinol staining and Sudan III tests. Progressive lignification of the seed coat... |

Three species of corals Stylophora pistillata, Lobophyllia corymbosa and Echinopora gemmacea were collected from Sharm Obhur to study their chemical composition. This information was important in the investigation of their metabolic pathways and their mode of feeding. The concentrations of amino acids in these species were 9.37, 21.35 and 3.09 mg.g(-1) dry weight of coral respectively. Plant pigments were highest in E. gemmacea followed by S. pistillata and then by L. corymbosa. Lipid concentrations in S. pistillata, L. corymbosa and E. gemmacea were 1.90, 8.58 and 1.32 mg.g(-1) of total coral respectively. The fatty acid methyl esters were analyzed in these species and the most abundant saturated acids were 16:0 and 18:0, while unsaturated acids included... |

Abstract: The objective of this work was to verify if there is linear dependence between the phenological, morphological, and productive traits and the energetic-nutritional ones in early maturing and super-early maturing corn genotypes. A total of 36 early maturing and 22 super-early maturing corn genotypes were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with three replicates, and the phenological, morphological, productive, and energetic-nutritional traits were measured. The matrix of phenotypic correlation coefficients among traits was determined; the multicollinearity diagnosis was carried out within each group of traits; and the canonical correlation analysis was performed. Linear dependence was observed between the groups of phenological,... |

ABSTRACT Sorghum is a crop that stands out as an alternative to corn due to lower soil fertility demand and increased tolerance to drought. Lack of information about the qualitative behaviour of sorghum hinders the recommendation of different purpose sorghum cultivars. The goal was to evaluate the chemical composition and in vitro digestibility of different purpose sorghum cultivar silages, at two cropping seasons. The trial was conducted at the Plant Production Department, Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rondônia, Colorado do Oeste campus, and chemical analyses and in vitro incubation were performed at the Laboratory of Animal Nutrition, Federal University of Mato Grosso, Cuiabá campus. The experimental design was a randomized... |

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of protected fat from palm oil on body weight and milk production and composition of lactating Lacaune ewes. Four treatments (0, 20, 40, and 60 g kg−1 as fed) of protected fat from palm oil were used to feed nine animals in each group. Isoproteic and isoenergetic diets were formulated and adjusted for each animal after milk weighing. Corn silage was used as roughage on the same proportion of concentrated to feed all animals. Milk samples were collected weekly for chemical analyses up to the seventh week of the lactation period and every other week after that until the end of the lactation period (182 days). Increased levels of protected fat in the diet of lactating ewes resulted in lower body... |

Two different biomasses (100 g multiplied by m super(-2) and 1 kg multiplied by m super(-2)) of oysters were put in identical sea-water ponds, thus leading to different trophic conditions, corresponding to rearing techniques. Changes in growth, biochemical composition and sexual maturation were recorded for two age groups. The first one included 9 month-old oysters and the second one 21 month-old oysters, at the beginning of the experiment. For both age groups, significant differences were observed in growth and biochemical composition. Lipids were accumulated faster for the lower biomass. However, the only difference concerning glycogen was observed on the older oysters. They showed a peak at the lowest biomass and a decrease at the larger biomass. Sexual... |

Water-soluble sulfated polysaccharides isolated from two red algae Sphaerococcus coronopifolius (Gigartinales, Sphaerococcaceae) and Boergeseniella thuyoides (Ceramiales, Rhodomelaceae) collected on the coast of Morocco inhibited in vitro replication of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) at 12.5 mu g/mL. In addition, polysaccharides were capable of inhibiting the in vitro replication of Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) on Vero cells values of EC(50) of 4.1 and 17.2 mu g/mL, respectively. The adsorption step of HSV-1 to the host cell seems to be the specific target for polysaccharide action. While for HIV-1, these results suggest a direct inhibitory effect on HIV-1 replication by controlling the appearance of the new generations of virus and... |

ABSTRACT: Genetic breeding of forage plants has increasingly contributed to the release of more productive plants. In this regard, evaluating the genotypic value is essential when aiming to rank genotypes based on the mean free of environmental factors. Therefore, this study aimed to predict the genotypic value of agronomic and nutritive value characters of three progenies of Panicum maximum. Hybrids were evaluated in a clonal test in an incomplete-randomized design with three treatments (progenies 1, 2, and 3) and two replications (clones). Six harvests were performed at 25cm from the ground level throughout one year. Progeny 2 provided better results for total and leaf dry mass yield, regrowth, and height, and lower incidence of leaf spot. Progenies 1... |

Abstract: The objective of this work was to quantify the genetic variability of 213 conilon coffee accessions of the Robusta Tropical cultivar, based on chemical characteristics related to the quality of green coffee beans, as well as to identify promising accessions for the breeding program of irrigated conilon coffee in the Brazilian Cerrado. The chemical characteristics evaluated were: protein and caffeine contents, total soluble solids and total lipids, ether extract, pH, and total titratable acidity. The data were subjected to the principal component analysis and cluster analysis based on the similarities observed within the first two principal components using the minimum variance method (Wards) and, as a measure of similarity, the Euclidean... |

The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of cutting frequency, harvest season and nitrogen fertilization on yield and floristic composition of the herbage harvested from a mountain meadow. The meadow was divided into 22 plots, each receiving a different N P K fertilization treatment. The study lasted seven years, and during the first three years (1985-1987) each plot was harvested twice per year (June and September) according to a traditional harvest system, whereas in the years 1989-1991 each plot was harvested three times per year (spring, summer and autumn) following a more intensive harvest system. Nitrogen fertilizer favoured the development of the grasses in spring, thus reducing the proportion of legumes in the two cut harvest... |
